BIRDS WISER THAN MEN.
The stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the tnrtle, and the crane, and the swallow, observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the Lord.—Jee. viii, 7.
Yes, the aerial songsters know
The time to leave this land of ours : When chilly blasts begin to blow,
And frosts of autumn scathe the flowers, How quick they spread their airy wing,
And take their flight to sunnier skies— A land where sweeter flow'rets spring,
And wintry tempests never rise !
They know when to return again:
Swiftly they come, on wings of light, When Spring breathes sweetly o'er the plain,
And earth is beautiful and bright. But 0, my people, saith our God,
Have not the swallow's wisdom here f Though tempests wild come like a flood,
They look not for a brighter sphere.
When storms of sorrow beat around, And judgments are in mercy given,
Their souls, still clinging to the ground, Refuse to seek their native heaven. |
